Ok...I am going to get a fresh-water fish aquarium for my house. I have no clue what fish to put together and what fish not too. I'd like them to be somewhat pretty. What should I get for the tank?

thanks

Before you even get to that point (deciding on fish) I would suggest you pick up a good aquarium book. Read through the parts about setting up a tank and maintaining a tank. Then browse the various fish shown in the book and spend a little time in a few local pet stores to see what's available in your area. Don't go by how shops keep fish, those are just there a few days and no thought is given to long term comparability in mast cases. Once you have done this you will have a good idea of what size tank to get and which fish you want. Furthermore you won't be in for nasty surprizes in a week or two after starting your tank.

I agree with anyone who said get a beginner's book. That is the best starting point. There are tons of species of fish and many of them are community fish and would be great for tank life. But they all have different requirements in the way of tank set-up and water quality and so on. You should try this website; it can help you with getting basic fish stats.

How many fish you can get depends on the size of your tank. The rule is one gallon per inch of fish.
Also, some fish like the gouramis require alot of space. Angelfish do better in tall tanks simply because of their body structure which is kind of elongated. Zebra danios are fast fish and like to be in schools of 5 or more. Betta fish are a great beginner fish but cannot be kept with other fish of the same breed and gender. You have alot to consider before buying fish cos you don't wanna have them all suffer and die. You will find alot of sites related to aquarium fish, google it.

You need to set up the tank first and get it cycling. For the first month until tank is stable I only put inexspensive fish. Your pet shop have fish called started fish. Most of the time they are gold fish. I get them as cheap as 12 for $1.00. I start my 30 gls tanks with 3 gold fish, 2 doz live shrimp, 2 female guppies, 4 male guppies. Your guppies are usually sold in a trio of 2 f, 1 male, $2.50. 2 silver mollies, 2 black mollies. Pr of swordtails. Pr. of platies. All above fish are usally $3.00 pr.
As you can see you can get a great assortment of fish for under 20 dollars.
Good Luck!

There are many ways to approach this. You can try going to your local pet stores and see what fishes they put together. There are also compatibility charts (like petsmart) or you can just talk to a salesperson directly and they should know.
Another way is to check fish compatibility on websites. One good site would be Aquariumfish.net. They have a detailed description of each of their fishes as well as its possible tankmates. In my opinion, it only lists a few, so you would have to probably search via yahoo or other search engines (keyword "[fish name] tankmates"). I hope this helps!

To give people a starting point, why don't you check out your local pet store or some websites and choose one fish that you really want. Then people can help you choose fish that are compatible with it. There's thousands of species available.
