It would depend on how long they have been dead, and what actions they are doing in your dreams there is more to it than that. If they are recently deceased, I would say that you are still in the first stage of grief, which is denial, and still trying to wrap your mind around the idea that they are dead, or wishing they were still there. If they have been dead for some time, it could be the last stage, which is acceptance. It could be that they wish to share a message or guidance to you, or that they want you to know they are ok, and watching over you. Your description is really too vague to offer a good interpretation, the more detail you can offer, the better the interpretation will be.
Edit: interesting...Water pertains to the emotions. The state of the water, indicates the state of the emotons. (calm water = calm feelings, agitated water =agitated feelings, etc. ) I feel that this image is not so much about the grandmother herself, exactly, but that there are feelings you need to express to your wife, you can't for some reason, and look to the grandmother as a wiser authority to intervene for you...

There is a variety of reason that it could be, firstly though your missing them. Although, varying on your religion or beliefs, the person could be trying to give you a message. The best idea, would be to have a dream journal, and before going to sleep ask your spirirt guide (or whomever you believe in) to allow you to see what message the person is trying to relay to you. Upon waking, write your dream down, if you do this for about a month (average time) you will more than likely have a more understanding as to the messege. And what this family member is trying to tell you or if it is your mind and soul missing them.

the next time you dream of them turn to them and ask them what they are wanting to tell you. keep a notebook by the bed write down what they say or do. note the environment colors and so on. Often loved ones do come back to check on us or help when needed. Interestingly a few months before my grandmother died i dreamed of her standing outside of a locked door trying to pry the lock open, my grandfather was next to her also jiggling the rock. I asked them what they were doing an dmy grandfather said they were trying to unlock the door becuase my grandmother needed to go through there soon. months later i heard about her death and about the same time i had the dream she had a near death experience but rebounded only to die not too long after.

RE:
what does it mean when dead loved ones appear in your dreams?
Spiritually speaking, is there some meaning behind this? Or is it just my collective unconscious? Please help.

I was told dreams can be decieving. Like dreams can make you act up in reality. Their just thoughts you would be thinking in the back of your mind.....so at night you conjure up your dreams. Also my Native american culture warns that dreams of a family member (loved one) who offers food>"you should not take it". I guess they say you might not wake up....Creepy huh!! If you wanna know more just ask..."I'll ask one of my elders"....

they are there for guidance at times, at times they can be there just to tell you that they are doing well........
if......you are nearing your life experience on this earth....they can be there to let you know that they will be waiting for you on the other side and that you have a place to go where you will always be cared for and very welcome......this usually happens when you get older or have a terminal illness.....
they can also just be there for night company and can give you insight into the unknown
seriously!
