I spent six years in the U.S. army, and never once worried about this problem, It would seem that there is a growing concern over this issue, I have read several articles about chicago based gang signs showing up in Iraq, as a former gang member, I personally dont see the problem with it.

Just because your a gang member doesnt discount the fact that you are a U.S. citizen. Nor does it disqualify you from serving your country.

the way that these articles are pointing at this issue is as if we are training our enemy to defeat us, I find that funny cus nobody said that when we helped Iraq in the Iran Vs. Iraq war

I understand that some of these guys are dangerous but they would be just as dangerous here on our streets as the would be anywhere else,

With the proper training and guidance they are more likely to come home and form more resposible groups that are truely intended for the GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT of our communities just as I did,

It is apparent that some cannot or did not read the question fully ,

AS A FORMER GANG MEMBER,,,

I have taken the training, discipline, and baring and applied it in my community and had a positive out come,

as far as them knowing the tactic's of combat,

I understood urban warfare well befor I joined the Army, the Army (at the time I was inlisted) provided little or no trianing in that area, things have changed but not much,

No its not and you can't stop gang members from joining the military, unless they had some outrageous criminal record. Ft. Hood is full gang members. Now, gang activity is bad. I was in the Army for 4 years and I am from Chicago, I'm just curious about what gang signs were put up in Iraq.

The Military is not supposed to accept sub standard recruits. In fact, potential recruits are suppose to be checked for gang tats and any affiliation with gangs. There is a moral hazard exception (which was used in the 80's and 90's for convicted felons who served in the military in lieu of jail time. Upon completion of service they would have their record cleared. I served with a few of those in 1980's). This clause has been the waiver most gang members use to get into the military now and it has been increasing being used as recruitment goals have come up short. That's one of the problems of the all volunteer military in this day and age when military service is looked upon as an option that is your last resort.

Some join to gain military tactics and bring it down to the streets and use it. Imagin all you learned when you were in, about how to kill someone in so many different ways, and picture that person having the bad intetions since he is a gang member, living on the same street as you. Imagin that person showing his gang members all of this. I mean they already commit murders and such but imagin them learning techniques on warfare. So yes it's a bad thing.

It is a bad thing because you cant put undisciplined thugs in grunt unit. I've been to combat (Kuwait City, Mogadishu) and you need to know combat strategies before you go into a firefight. If they are trained adequately then yes, but throwing some gang bangers in fresh with some "REAL" combat soldiers will only amount to the demise of the gangstas no doubt, but might also get grunts killed also.

If you read the Vanity Fair article what they were saying was that these Gang Members are taking what they learned & bringing it home to train their fellow gang members.
That is dangerous.
...and yes, you do make some valid points

IMO as a former legal services clerk (4421) in the USMC, anyone who is actively involved with criminality in any form, and plans to continue to be so has no place in the US Military. Same goes with members of extremists and hate groups like the KKK. If an enlistee forsakes those organizations, then fine.

If the gang member gives up criminal activity, I am fine with them being in the military. It could be a great opportunity for them, and they could do a great service to our country.

i agree with the growth and development side.. i believe gang members should be allowed in the military just like everyone else, if not more so to get them away from 'bad' environments.

Not if we are at war and they die it isn't, otherwise yes, it is a VERY bad idea.
