if you want too kill the tree before you cut it down,make sure there are no other tree's in the area that you do not want to kill. Purchase an auger type bit used for bulb's,drill around tree 10-12 feet from trunk 10-12 inches deep, pour half full with rock salt, fill with water and that will do the trick.

Yes, you can use chemicals to kill a tree but depending on it's size it could take quite a lot and probably repeated applications if it is a large caliper trunk. A better, more environmentally friendly solution would be to girdle the trunk of the tree by cutting a grove deep into the cambium layer beneath the bark all the way around the trunk several inches up from the ground. This will basically cause the tree to die of starvation and thirst. It will take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for a complete kill, but once done, there is no turning back.

Don't use chemicals to kill plants because it is not good for the enviroment and living things health. However, why don't you call an horticulture who may be help you remove with out killing a tree which can be removed to another location.
