Okay, so we are now occupying a country we had no business invading. We have been there for over 4 years and the government in Iraq has yet to step up and take care of things.
We lose more soldiers everyday and there is no end in the violence in sight.
We have made a mess of this country and now we are considering complete withdrawl...for the most part. Is there another option? What will happen if we leave the country in the mess it's in? Now that we are there should we clean up the mess we've made, is that even possible?
I'm liberal, but I have a hard time supporting complete withdrawl considering we have left the country and the innocent people in dire staights.
What would you consider the best option and what will your predicted outcome of that option?

I know, lots of question, but I'd love to hear what you have to say.
Thanks

I'm not a liberal or a conservative but I am a realist.
I agree with most that you say and would only differ in the respect that I would pull our troops back to the borders and let the factions fight it out. If the people allow such radicals to flex their muscles then we will never succeed in taming that society. Move back and eliminate forces from outside Iraq from entering. Let the factions fight it out and when they're tired of swinging at one another we should step in and then and only then help them to set up a government that they can live with. I'm tired of our troops standing in the middle of their civil war and I'm tired of flag draped caskets coming home in the cover of darkness!!!

I agree with you. I was against this war from the very beginning. That being said, though, I can't help but think that it would be wrong for us to not clean up the mess we have made. However, how would we go about doing that? Also, it seems like the situation is f**ked up beyond repair, because there are now insurgents all over the place. Also, the terrorist situation has now gotten even worse, because the war has become a cause celebre among the Muslim fundamentalists and a whole new generation of terrorists is now being bred as a result.

I usually enjoy making liberals mad with my comments, but this question is serious.

The Democrats have not said how Iraq would fare after our troops are withdrawn from them. It is obvious that Iraq is not ready to defend their own country and it will indeed turn into a quagmire if our troops leave before their time.

I am not happy with this war. I loath Bush for his handling of it, but we are in it whether we like it or not, and we have to finish what we started.

How would Democrats treat a post-war Iraq when they are all killing each other even moreso than they are doing now?

Do they even care?

No one's saying we pull all the troops out tomorrow. But I think enforcing a phased (i.e., GRADUAL) withdrawal of our troops will light a fire under the Iraqis' butts and make them start to take charge of their own security instead of being co-dependent is NOT a bad thing. I don't know why we're living our lives based on whatever imaginary army the cons think will invade Iraq when we leave, but I think our mission should be our mission, and we should do whatever the heck we have to do to accomplish it and get out of there.

They have been settling things in that part of the world for over 3 thousand years. They will settle this mess as well.

I agree with your premise, but every time an American gets killed fighting in their war, I care a little less about what happens to the Iraqis.

i dont think a full withdrawl is smart, but pull out the troops to where they are not being shot at and let people fighting kill each other. we need to watch the borders to stop foreign fighters from joining,

If we leave the outcome is inevitable. They will have to grow a spine and fight for what they want. The strong will overcome the weak.

You said it yourself. We have a responsibility to fix what we broke. However what if the Iraqi's are unable to stabling the country on their own? Are we supposed to stay there indefinitely?
