Hi, Russian captain steals a russian submarine and heads towards america, the yanks think hes gonna nuke them, but ryan (main us character) knows he's trying to defect coz the day is his wife's birthday.
The russians wanna blow him up and the yanks wanna blow him up, so ryan manages to drop (helicopter) onto the red october, where they fake a radiation leak, so all the russian sailors get off red october and into lifeboats, then one goes a bit mad, till he's shot.
A torpedo is fired, by the russian sub chasing at the same time as the yanks fire a dud torpedo, the russian torpedo comes back and blows the russian sub up (which the other sailors didnt know was there and everyone thinks the red october has been sunk) When it dies down, the red october manages to finally reach america where the captain defects.
Fantastic book and film.

ps. The film was very true to the book as well, so you can use the film if you want!

There is a LOT behind the story of the Hunt for Red October... I can't believe you haven't seen the movie! You should read the book... it is a hard book to put down! I bet you could have it read in no time! The movie was done very well... but in the movie they don't go into much detail about how the captain (played by Sean Connery) is NOT Russian... He is Lithuanian!! A BIG DIFFERENCE! Being Lithuanian compared to Russian is like being a black man in the south in the 1860's!! Lithuania is a tiny country by Poland, and whenever Russia or Germany wanted to "move in" they would - and take over... "occupation" was hell for Lithuanians. The difference between the slavery we had here in the USA, and the "occupation" of Lithuania, is that here in the USA, our main battle was fought in 1861 - 1865... In Lithuania, it just never seemed to end until recently. If you search on Yahoo for Lithuania occupation, you'll find a lot of links that are fast reads!

The Soviet sub command kills his political officer as so he can pirate the sub to America so he can be a lazy American and avoid his homework not learn anything then work in fast food services for the rest of his life.
