Go to the american diabetes association website and read up on diabetes.
You didn't mention when you ate last before the test, this is very important. You should test before eating, then two hours after. 221 isn't high if it was within an hour after eating but it is if it were 2 1/2 hours after eating.
Talk to your doctor and check out the website. Good Luck!

I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy. Nearly 10 years after her birth, I now have Glucose Intolerance, also known as pre-diabetes. The doctor will most likely tell you that 221 after eating, especially right after drinking kool-aid is not by itself cause for alarm. The number that is the most important is the one that they get with a blood test after you have been fasting for 12 hours. If this number is high, than you will be sent for a 1-hour glucose test and then a 3-hour test if the 1-hour test is also high. Even if you do have Gestational Diabetes, it is generally manageable with a strict adherence to a meal plan given to you by a dietitian. Cut back on the sugary drinks and drink more low-fat or fat-free milk and water. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, lean protein, some fruit, and balance it out with whole grain products. Watch your sugar and fat intake. Eat several smaller meals/snacks throughout the day instead of 3 large meals. Even if you don't have Gestational Diabetes, this way of eating is healthy for both you and your baby. Gestational Diabetes typically goes away after the baby is born, but moms who have had it have an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, which is what I am working towards controlling.

Was your blood sugar level taken while fasting? Or was that taken at a random time? A fasting blood sugar level of 221 is more than double what it should be. A constant barrage of too much sugar coursing through your veins can cause the feelings you are having, and are warning you to take action to get your sugar under better control. Don't end up getting gangrene in your feet and legs from uncontrolled blood sugar levels. The treatment is... amputation. Not pretty.

That really depends. When did you test. If it was a fasting blood sugar then it should have been under 100. If it was 2 hours after a meal it should have been under 120. I would DEFINITELY bring it up to my doctor tomorrow and just know that you may be diagnosed and will probably need at least some pills to help. Good luck

Yeah, you should definitely talk with your doctor. I was just diagnosed as diabetic. Fasting glucoses, after 12 hours with no food or beverage intake, other than water, should be below 125, 126 or higher is diabetes. Two hours after any meal your blood glucose level should not go above 200, if it does, you're diabetic.

I did the glucose test and mine came back 158 and they said that was HIGH and that I might have gestational diabetes .. I then went and did a 3 hr. glucose test and my sugar was 108. Perfectly normal.
They said anything ABOVE 140 is high-risk for gestational diabetes.
You should try doing the test again 1 hr. from eating .. by then your body should have metabolized the sugar.
good luck! God bless!

Yes you should be very concerned! My father and aunt have diabetes and in one of there worse cases their numbers were in the 200's. That is an astronomical number. Even if you just had something sugary it wouldn't go that HIGH. I would try and see someone sooner or put in a call and tell them. **As others have mentioned I would be interested in knowing how long it had been since you ate or drank. Still seems high though

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.
And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.
