I'm thinking about getting one for our lawn. I'd like to know your thoughts on how well they work, or any brand recommendations.

they actually work great. The problem is laying out the lines. If you purchase a unit that follow the hose itself you need to note that it will travel the length of a single hose and not pass over a coupling to another hose. The units that follow a string are good, however, they only go as far as the hose allows.
Make sure you have a watering pattern in mind before you use them. The time of travel and pattern is directly related to the settings on the wheels and the water pressure you use. Play with all the factors and decide on a more standard use for your area. I actually overcame the hose length problem by buying a small diameter air hose in a three hundred foot length and had it fitted with normal garden Male and Female attachments. Worked great because the smaller diameter allowed for greater consistent water pressure and a much larger coverage capability. Good Luck.

They work very good, even up small hills. I think Lawngenie makes them.

My mom does and she really likes it. I don't know the brand name though.
