Motorists would pay 9 cents a gallon more at the pump and 50 percent more in annual vehicle registration fees under a bipartisan tax proposal designed to generate more than $1 billion in new funding every year for state and local roads. The package proposed Tuesday by a coalition of business, labor and government groups represents one of the biggest tax hikes in recent Michigan history.

Like a balloon push one end the other expands. Cutting federal taxes means less available for the states so taxes on the state level go up and deficit rise. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Why that is so difficult for people to believe I don't know. For the people in Michigan the automakers want $50 Billion 30 years ago Gm. Ford and Chrysler made crap cars and when the imports started arriving America's response was not a better product but a tariff on imports. Guess what the Japanese cars still sold. Who wants an expensive crap car? That's Gm's and Fords fault. Now they want $50 Billion in handouts to continue making crap cars? Who had the Prius and other reliable Hybrids ready when gas prices rose? Who were building truck plants at the same time? Give me a break. GM and Ford should have been listening to their customers or at the very least all their red ink a long time ago. Toyota and Honda don't have these problems they just have better cars. I'm also tired of the Republicans and automakers blaming unions. Make a better damn car. They had 30 years and don't deserve a penny. I own Honda.

No matter where you live, you'll be paying taxes. Be glad you don't live in New York or PA, where the taxes are higher than Michigan. Maybe instead of complaining about the taxes, do your citizen type of duties and vote. Vote to curtail those Michigan trains, you know, the trucks that weigh so much that they have 32 wheels on them? Why do you think that there is so many tires? To get around the federal laws that limit a truck to 80,000. How much more damage to the roads is caused by those monsters driving back and forth?

The state has major revenue problems and major cost problems. All the new taxes are a response to the fact that, with the economy going south, the state can't cover its expenses from its old tax base. Add onto that the fact that they can't cut programs without offending important interest groups (on both the left and the right), and it's the only way they can come up with the money.

Well, the roads have to get repaired. And years ago, the government cut off federal funding to those states that chose to raise their highway speed limits to over 55 mph. I think Michigan is at 75, right?

Take a page from the Illinois tax book - they pay less for their roads due to the tollways. The money they get from there pays for their roads. They tollways paid for themselves way back in the 80's. Maybe more states should adopt that method. I mean a total of $5.75 per day on the tollways. . .

I think you will notice it less at the pump and in the registration fees than paying it daily as you go to and from work. . .

the state is in big trouble,
the tax hike for the roads is a joke, the MDOT has been repairing the same roads over and over again,

Michigan had chance for change back in November but they did not want to change,,,,
the saying here is the last one to leave Michigan turn off the lights,,,

Yeah, We need to get rid of all the politicians in lansing and start from scratch with some new blood.

no one in lansing cares that there are no jobs in our state, they just want to bicker about how to stick it to the tax payers.

maybe the governor and the legislators ought to tighten thier belts and take some pay cuts. It's not like they are earning thier money anyhow!!!

I think it's immature to expect government services without paying for them. I've been to Michigan several times in recent years and I see a lot of road repair that needs doing!
