The only explanation I can give is that the people who say that to you are narrow minded twits! You like what you like no one can help that. Keep listening to whatever you like, there's no rule that says certain people have to listen to certain kinds of music, that's just silly. Music is universal.

It would seem strange to be teased about it. Especially as rock was music that was "whitified" if you will from what was popular among black Americans in the early half of the 20th century. And rock continues to take inspiration from what are considered black music such as soul, jazz, funk, et cetera.
Really though, music doesn't belong to a race, generally different types arise from different subcultures which are often correlated with race. Just listen to whatever you like, it's not like your skin colour should define your tastes in some magic way.

I love when people try to classify music into "cutural" subtypes! Listen to what ever makes you feel good! When people tease you because you are a certain ethnicity and you are not listening to music that is predominately made by persons of the same ethnicity... THEY are being prejudice! I am the whitest person in ohio... and if I only listened to music of "My Ethnicity" I would be listening to Bluegrass and Folk music....which.... now that I think about it.. I do like... BUT give me a BB King album or a John Coltrane album over the "oh brother where art though" album anyday! Music does not understand skin pigment... that is something that man has FU#$% up!

Oh hell yeah. i'm not lots into metallic, yet a number of my faves are equipment of a Down, Rage against The device, Sevendust, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Queens of the Stone Age, KoRn, or perhaps The treatment and The Eagles (previous college Rock rocks! LOL). I capture quite some flack from people who look to think of I "choose to be white" (as though) - yet they fail to attain how most of the artists in my rock sequence are literally BLACK. factor is, stable track is powerful track. I pay attention to exceedingly much each and every form below the solar - as long because it touches my "chuffed place", ya dig? My *on line* pals like myself and that i've got a concept that we are actually not actually that few - by some potential we in basic terms have been given geographically spread out truly a great way... guess too severe a concentration in one area may well be risky! :-) Black GRRLS Rock.

I do the same thing, I love listening to all types of music. A real music lover listens to all types and doesn't discriminate. I think white kids don't get teased about the type of music they listen to because some people of their own race like the same music, having it in mind that rap is "in", and black people don't tease them because they like rap music too. The only reason black people get teased about listening to rock and pop is because people of their own race don't listen to it. Just because they don't listen to it, they think only white people are allowed to listen to those types of music. I think it's stupid. How dumb is it that people can actually label a specific type of music to a specific race. That's madd retarded.

i know how you feel, im asian and people stereotype me as listening into bhangra or bollywood music, but i can't stand that type of music,
i get teased for listening to rock music.
everyone has different tastes in music, it doesn't matter if youre black, white or asian if you listen to music that isn't you're stereotype you will get teased about it, so just ignore youre brothers, they probly havent acquired their taste in music yet, in time this may change, so keep listening to the music you want to and ignore the teasing.
btw, white ppl do get teased for listening to rap music, especially if they go around dressing like a rapper, like a kid i knew, he would get teased almost everyday, but he ignored it and didn't change.

My wife had an African American roommate in college who spoke PERFECT English when she was with her white roommates, but when she was with her fellow African American friends she talked just like one of the sistas on the Jerry Springer show. My wife asked her about it one day, and her roommate told her she does that because she doesn't want her friends to think she's "better" than them. So I guess some African Americans equate behaving like white people and doing things white people do with being stuck-up or elitist. Does that make sense? P.S.: MANY white kids get teased for listening to rap -- either that or they get outright criticized (the word "wigger" is being tossed around in my community a lot these days).

I listen to different types of music too. Everybody is different, with different taste. People expect too much or certain things from other people. Keep doing your own thing, it shouldn't matter to them. They wouldn't like it if they were being stereotyped.

Individuality over stereotypes.
I dont' think anybody has a right to tell you what to and what not to listen to. Someone teasing you, or telling you you can't do certain things because of the color of your skin... isn't that racism? :)
