In hereford (in herefordshire in england) you get loads of seagulls flying around although it is nowhere near the sea.
There is a river there but I thought they only lived by the sea.

Most people call them seagulls, but the proper name is just gull, along with the species name (i.e. Black-headed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, etc) Gulls are not tied to the sea. You will see more of them around the coasts, but they can be found very far from the sea. Here in North America Franklin's Gulls breed far inland on the northern prarie. I have seen Andean Gulls very high in the Andes in Ecuador.

The term "Seagull" is a misnomer... it has no actual taxonomic meaning. Many species of Gull never even see the sea in their lives.... most people assume from the laymans term "seagull" that all such birds make their living on the ocean. I assure you that is not the case... I too live hundreds of miles from any coast or sea and we have a large population of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls in my area at the many freshwater lakes here in Northern Canada.

In Utah, USA, they saved the local farmers' crops from grasshoppers, when they first settled there. It's nowhere near the sea.

There are seagulls in Utah and central Texas. They are adventurous scavengers. They do get around pretty well.

They go where the food is, like dumpsters in shopping center parking lots. I live in Colorado in the US, *nowhere* near the ocean, and they're here too.

As there is so much waste fast food lying about, these gulls have adapted their feeding habits so they go where there are easy pickings. Consequently there has been a huge increase in their numbers.

Does not have to be very close to the see. It's just there.
have you not ever seen a new plow field full of seagulls, and there is no see close by?
Food, and they fly, miles and miles and miles and miles.....

I heard they spend most their time on the coast, but come inland in Winter to find food.
