I used to clean rooms at hotels, so I'm a professional. The end goes OVER the top. And sometimes it's folded into a point, to make it look pretty.

It's a preference thing. I would prefer you have a better life without that guy. Sheesh!
The only real need to have it one way over another that I could think of, is if you have small children, it should roll under. Then when curious little hands smack at the roll and make it go around and around, it just goes around and around and not unravel all over the floor.

Over is the rule. That's how public toilets are usually set up. My wife will sometimes put a new roll on "under" and I'll flip it over. Honestly, it's no big deal, but since I have Toilet Paper Alignment OCD I must change it....must correct....

He broke up with you for that? Wow. He did you a huge favor because he sounds like a real tool. Of course it doesn't matter. In fact, you should consider whether someone has a strong opinion on the toilet paper question to be a litmus test of whether or not to date that person. Whatever the personality flaw is that made that person break up with you for something as dopey and innocuous as toilet paper would certainly be a tool in other areas as well.

if you want the design to show and do the ducky little hotel
"v" put it over. If you want to slow down the speed off the
roll put it under. Then put the roll about 15 foot from the stool
and when your guy realizes that the important thing to
think about is proximity to his butt --- your problems will
be solved.

Under. Makes the tearing-off more efficient and promotes less waste. However even I've never broken up with a woman over this debatable and easily fixed an issue. Are you sure it wasn't because you forgot to flush?

Absolutely over on to the front. The only exception is that if you have a pet that paws at the front of the roll, then it is acceptable to have it feed down the backside.
