I can remember being a little kid and I'd tell mom I needed some little cardboard valentines or Easter egg dye for school and she'd get slightly peeved at the amount of money she had to spend for silly school parties.

This year, my daughter needed these things for her Pre-School parties. Cardboard valentines are a buck for a box of 24 and Easter egg dye is like 2 dollars...

Surely they haven't dropped their prices over the last 20 years or so..

I remember my mom being sad because we couldn't afford stuff like that...(we were really poor) somehow she always managed to get some money somewhere for important stuff...

They actually were probably more expensive back then. I was lucky, I always got all that stuff with no complaints. Halloween costumes as well. I know some parents feel they are being imposed on for the fact that they have to get that stuff.

It gets worse when they get older and get involved in scouting or sports or band. When my daughter was in 8th grade we had to buy her seven pairs of specialty shoes over the school year. Band. Cheerleading. Regular gym classes (that they had to leave in their gym lockers). Tap. Jazz. Basketball. Track. Plus two pair for everyday school wear.

I always wondered what my mom was thinking when she married my dad. She was his FOURTH wife and already had two daughters by two different wives.

but as far as the rest of your question, yes, the stuff is still pretty cheap. My mom had to buy it for FIVE kids though.
Yes, my parents had FIVE of us. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?????

Surely. I do wonder, though. Was it REALLY that horrible to take us to the Wal-Mart for some dye and Valentine's?

I doubt it. The value of a dollar has certainly changed over the years though.

I'm cheap so it irritates me when the wife says she needs money for things like that...

My parents scrimped and saved to not only provide those things, but a lot of music lessons and musical instruments, etc. I appreciate them for it.
