It's a combination of factors, the tweenie girls and Howard Stern's crusade to have people vote for the worst.
Does anyone cringe and feel embarssed when he sings?

Because America is no longer looking for the next great singer, but the next big entertainer. From what I've heard (never actually watched the show myself), no one this season was really that great, or really stood out in any way. Enter Sanjaya; gives people reason to watch every week. Without Sanjaya, yes, AI would still be a ratings powerhouse, but I don't think anyone would be as enthusiastic about it. There'd be no 'oddball' to compare the truly good people to. And lets face it, that's what makes good TV.

People like the underdog. He has a great smile and pretty hair if he doesn't mess with it. Plus he is the poster child for a website called votefortheworst.com. It is their goal to screw up AI by getting un AI likers to vote for the worst. They have been doing it for years. Could explain Taylor Hicks!

I don't think people actually "like" him. Most probably vote for him because it's becoming this big deal and they are trying to keep him on the show for as long as possible because they can. I don't think he even wants to be on the show anymore.

I think people sre voting for him bacause he is interesting and, of course because of the vote for the worst site(which I wish they would SHUT DOWN)

no i can't stand him....and the judges know that he shouldn't be their that's why a week ago..Simon said it doesn't matter what we say does it... last night Simon actually said " let's try a different approach...you were great.."

I like him because he`s entertaining and that`s the reason I watch TV, to be entertained. If he leaves the show will be sooo boring.
