Love my community...However over the last two years I have noticed a trend in young girls ages 13 to 22 who seem to be fixated on Boys on the Side ...dressing up like a guy...acting like a guy....I know that there are individuals who are in a sexual revolution to try and do everything but how does dressing outside of your sex define you....I dont wear a dress, heels and stockings everyday...What I am referring to is that hip-hop boy look....baggy pants, big polo shirts, sweatsuit jackets, caps ****** to the side,no sign of the girl inside? Where is this all leading to? I just want real opinions...

Have you ever thought that maybe they just feel more comfortable that way? Maybe they identify as more on the boyish end of the spectrum. Dressing outside your sex defines you if you feel that you are more masculine or don't fit into the proscribed way a woman 'should be', according to society.
Personally, as a bisexual woman, I absolutely love girls who identify as "bois", who dress more masculine, who act more masculine, and who don't, as you say, have "no sign of the girl inside", but who instead choose to express their womanhood in a way that isn't typical to you.
Not all woman act the same way, and there is such a thing as female masculinity, butchness, which isn't an imitation of maleness, but a masculinity of its own- far different, if you come to know it.
What's it leading to? Nothing at all . . . it just is what it is. If you look back in history, you'll find tons of women who have done the exact same thing- look up Marion 'Joe' Carstairs or Radclyffe Hall. Expresions of femininity have been long-changing and relaxing of late, but believe me, that doesn't mean femininity as an institution is losing anything.
For every Ciara dressed like a boy (which, I might add, only happens just for that video), there are a million Beyonces who are uber-feminine. You've got nothing to worry about.
Hope that helps.

"Dressing and acting like dudes...." LOL!! Hmmm...okay i'll try to approach this question with care. This so called "trend" of girls dressing like boys is NOT a trend for all who do it. Yes...to some it is fashionable to throw on loose wearing jeans and a wife beater every now & then. But to others, it isn't a phase, it's how they prefer to dress. It's what they feel comfortable wearing. It's their natural mannerisms to be a little more on the masculine side. It's called being a butch or stud lesbian. My girlfriend is one of these women. She's 23. Has ALWAYS been more of a tomboy. She's never been ultra girly & into the heels and makeup. So when she came to terms with her sexuality, it was NATURAL for her to embrace a more masculine style of dress. She loves her body. (so do I :-) She knows she is still a woman. She is just a woman who does NOT need to show skin in order to be a sexy and confident person.

I think it's just the current fashion. It may have something to do with the (perceived) tuff guy look associated with hip-hop. A few girls I know seem to do it as an in your face kind of thing. They have gotten accused of "acting" like guys so they almost go to extremes showing their critics that they don't give a damn!
I don't think it will lead to anything - except for maybe a better life for the gay community. It's usually the extreme that has the balls (sorry) to stand up and change things. It might make society a little uncomfortable - but in the long run it helps.
One more thing. Your post, as well as many others use the old "act like" comment. I was guilty of it as well until the day a flamboyant guy got up in my face and explained to me that it wasn't an act and he would only be "acting" if he wasn't. He told me I was guilty of the same homophobia as the straights that say we should "act normal"...he was right!!! The only reason I want him to act differently came from my own insecurities...OMG - the straights are looking, what will they think...WHO CARES!!!

I don't think it's that big a deal. I would never dress like a guy, but if it makes them feel comfortable or better about themselves, let them do it. I guess it's a matter of self image. How they feel inside may not be represented by dresses. So, they wear what does match their insides. I have noticed a trend though. It could possibly be a fad as well. Studs do seem to get a ton of girls. They could be after that. Who knows.

I agree with the "why do you care comment". In all honesty, everybody has the right to dress any way they want without being questioned. Everyone is different and prefers different things. I am a 22 year old girl and i LOVE dressing like a girl. I love looking hot and sexy yada yada, BUT on days where i want to be comfortable, relax, be chill, i wear boy shorts, polos, and hats. People shouldn't be put in boxes.

Girls that age tend to be insecure about their bodies, and there's a lot of pressure for them to wear very revealing clothing. So that could be a reaction to all that. I'm sure the girl inside is quite visible once you talk to them and once the clothes come off.
By the way, have y'all seen the video? Ciara looks nothing like a boy. She's speaking in emotional terms.

Why ask why? Why exactly does it matter? Is life so short that you have to have a reason to do something, be making a statement with every piece of clothing? Sometimes things are simply comfortable.

It's all just fashion. If you aren't attracted to that look, that's your preference.
Personally, I don't take fashion or clothing too seriously. It's personality & intelligence that count for me. Worrying about what clothes everyone is wearing just seems a bit shallow to me.

Well there are many reasons to eplain why they are doing it
Naybe they are gender confused or maybe its just a fashion statement.
My fiancee just so happened to be a drag king and i think that is awesome.
It doesnt matter what you wear.

"Boys on the Side" was a 1995 Movie staring: Whoopie Goldberg, Mary Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore.
It dealt with three women leaving their "men" and moving to Phoenix to start new lives.
Drew's character finds true love.
Mary Louise's Character Dies of AIDS given to her from her ex.
and Whoopie's character is a lesbian who chooses to stay with Mary Louise's character as her care taker.
Not one of them dresses as you've described.
