The underground mall is pretty big. The first time I went in, I got a little turned around. Anyway...There are lots of stores that you would find in the states. Think Gap, Zara, Old Navy, etc. There are also a lot of stores like Jacob, Jacob outlet, etc. Indigo bookstore is fun, and so is the sale section at Ailles. Simmons is a nice department store. If you want cheap souvenirs for your friends back home or family or whatever, go to Dollarama....everything is 1$ or less. You may have to walk up and down all the aisles to find something, but they have a lot of things with the Canadian flag or Montreal/Quebec things.

As for the exchange rate:
This is pretty accurate: http://fx.sauder.ubc.ca/today.html
And this: http://coinmill.com/CAD_USD.html

As a warning, most people will appreciate if you speak in French, but the younger ones become impatient and will switch to English on you. Good luck and have lots of fun!
