It sounds like you need to work on your self-respect.

First, Hermes, you've chosen quite a name to live up to .... is this pride? Is this your heritage? Is this your destiny?

In any case, some who belittle others aren't lacking in self-respect; they are simply voicing irritation at irrational arguments from, and a lack of intellect in others.

There are many people who make arguments here who try to pick fights with the (for lack of a better term) "big guns", who are simply not qualified to do so.

For example: Someone newly converted to Christianity may be told by a pastor that they are now qualified to discuss Christianity with ANYONE because the Holy Spirit will fill their mouths with words of wisdom. They come here and try to wax philosophical with atheists, bringing up simplistic arguments such as Pascal's Wager (not even knowing the term), and think themselves wise. This gets old, and people get tired of it, and will verbally thrash such individuals. Is it a lack of self-respect, or is it a response to tiresome banter?

In any case, that's what I see is going on. It doesn't account for all of it, but definitely some.

Evidently Hermes never heard that God said "pride" is sin.

Proverbs 8:13
"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
pride and arrogancy, and the evil way,
and the forward mouth, do I hate.

If you have pride, take pride only in knowing the Lord. We are nothing without God.

it shows also that the person doing the belittling is probably jealous of something the person has got and they havent. they may be insecure themselfs and feel the need to belittle someone as they appear hard and people wont like them so they dont reveile their true self like a protective armour agaisnt other humans?

Typically, I would agree. But I don't think that's the case with White Supremists. Afterall, their entire message is that whites are superior and that they are proud to be white. Pathetic? Yes. Scary? Absolutely. But they actually believe these things. Meanwhile, I don't put much stock in heritage. It's who you are, not where you came from, that is important.

Absolutely, I live with a man who constantly does this. It is quite embarassing because he belittles people out loud in public. Now I'm going to use your quote everytime he does it. Maybe one day he'll stop.
