Humanity represents the pinnacle of evolution: the evolution of a rational, thinking, self-aware brain is the ultimate survival tool. Using their brain, humans can adapt to virtually any environment, from the burning sands of the Sahara, to the chilling tundras of Siberia, to the depths of outer space. We are an offshoot of primates, whose shape and features (hands with opposable thumbs) were condusive to the development of large brains and complex tools.
Humans however, still possess a modicum of their animal instincts, which we may never exorcise. Our primordial drive for territory, food, mates, and dominion over others translates into the modern drive for war, conquest, plunder, and slavery. Humans are not alone, as most primates compete savagely with their own kind, with the victor viciously killing the conquered's children, and mating with his females, and taking his land. Even social primates, like baboons, tend to cluster around a single alpha male, who keeps his harem of females that are completely subservient to his will, with the only males being tag-alongs who exist only by the grace of the alpha.
Nor is this exclusive to the primates, virtually every animal competes to some degree in this manner. If anything can be said about humans, it's that we are one of the few (if any) animals that has no qualms about raising a step child.
What is the point of humanity? I suppose of you were religious, the point is to listen to the big kahuna in the sky. I, however, am not. I believe that nature is inherintly neutral, so there is no naturally existing "purpose" that nature has given her most adaptive, intelligent, and yet most frail, children.
I believe that humans create their own purpose. What that purpose is, is entirely dependent on the individual.

Ours is not to wonder why, ours is just to do or die.
I don't really believe that. :-)
I'll tell you this: I know more good people than bad people. Yeah, there are people out there who murder and kill and lie and cheat. But it is unfair to judge all of humanity based on those people. There are millions and millions of teachers, advocates, social workers, doctors, firemen, entertainers, and charity organizers all over the world. Do not forget these people, and therefore discredit their amazing contributions to this world. There are even more people that are poor and need help. They are the reason that human beings exist. We exist to overcome these obstacles of greed and death. Whether or not we ultimately succeed may (or may not be) up in the air, but that is not your question. The reason we exist is quite clear. Living up to that reason is a whole other question... but do not ignore those who actually succeed in doing so. Be one of them, and your purpose will be fulfilled.

To grow to the point where we no longer do the things you describe. And unfortunately, there is no growth without pain.
