There are many variables that need to be associated with this behavior before you can call it madness. (What is being said, why, how frequently, and what else is going on). Most of the very normal people I've been around any length of time or another have said something to themselves...if only just for a little bit.

Now if you are sitting somewhere having full conversations with yourself like Smeagle? and Gollum -- uh...you probably need to get some help...

Madness is never a term to be used toward mentally ill. Only if you are having troubled thoughts that inhibit you from doing anything else. It could be distrubing to others if you actually talk out loud to yourself all the time.

jajaja no.... its not madness, its pretty much normal. People do it all the time because its a healthy way to process your thoughts..... many ppl find it crazy to talk to themselves but if you ever watch soap operas and movies, where the character is talking to herself, well she aint crazy, she is just thinking aloud on what she is going to do, or the solution to her problem. So if you feel like talking to yourself, go for it. One word of advice though; make sure no one is listening when u talk by yourself or else they will know your secrets!

A very, very common madness. The progress a person makes spiritually is measured by the degree to which he or she isn't thinking.

Not at all, I think talking to yourself is an short-term easy way of curing lonliness, and I think everyone does it just to keep sane. Of course if you do excessively, in public or actually see an invisible person that you are talking to, then maybe you need to get help. Otherwise its perfectly harmless.

I have always talked to myself. I like to think that on occassion its the only sensible conversation going on! Madness would surely be arguing with oneself, even losing it!!

I don't think so. Depends on your religion and people talk to God everyday aloud and that is okay. Talking to yourself is like you evaluating things from someone else's view. As long as it is not a long drawn out lecture and answers than it's ok.
