I have some Zinnia seedlings started in my kitchen window. As they've gotten about 5-6" tall they are beginning to flop over. Are they supposed to do that? If not, how do I correct the problem? Thanks!

They need more sunlight if not they will grow tall and leggy. Remove the dome (the plastic cover on top if you use it).
You can solve this problem by placing light bulb for plant about 4" above the seedlings and leave it on for 18-24 hours.

If you don't want to buy light bulb, you can place the seedlings on direct sun outside on nice sunny warm days (60-70 degree) and bring inside in the evening. If it's too cold to put outside, you can move them around the house, room to room. But you need to do this gradually, place them in area that gets morning sun first for few days and increase the sunlight. You can do this until the weather is ready to plant outside.

I always start my zinnias from seeds on my last frost date, indoor for 1-2 weeks and transplant outside, so I don't have to baby them too long. They grow faster that way.

They are top heavy, like gerber daisies. You have to get a support with an open center, place in pot where the zinnia can be held up by this support, thus letting the flower cover the open center. That's all it needs. The garden center should have a 3-legged support with an open center to use with Zinnias and Daisies.

how is the light there? Zinnia likes full sun. they also may be hungry.. what are you starting them in and is there any fertilizer in the media?

I think light is probably the big issue, but I'm just guessing.

Julie is correct. They are "leggy" because they are reaching for light.
