Something has to start the engine turning to build compession and spark, so you need a starter motor.
I can leave my Model A ford in the right position and sometimes only turn on the ignition, the advance the spark lever and it will fire up, but most times you gotta use the starter.

I will be assuming that you are referring to an automotive engine or piston aircraft. In anycase a starter is not required, but without a starter, you would have to crank your engine by hand. And that my friend, will not be much fun. If you've ever seen a movie about WWI or any movie with old planes, you can see someone cranking the propeller by hand, not my idea of fun. A stater is not required, but it sure makes life a lot easier and safer.

on a lawnmower u pull a cord to spin the engine to get it started. on a car an electric motor, the starter, spins it for you. btw, the guy who invented it made lots of money. before that the old cars had a crank up front which u had to spin by hand!

All internal combustion engines require something to start the combustion cycle. It could be an electric motor, hand crank, pull cord or inertia through the transmission. Unfortunately, they don't "just start".

To start with, a starter is a motor for your vehicle's ENGINE. Without it, you would have to have purchased a standard transmission vehicle, & find a sharp incline to park each time you needed to bump start the engine.
