I live in Alabama and I have blooming flowers. It's supposed to be cold this weekend and I want to protect them. I have Glads that are just breaking the ground and some annuals out. What if anything should I do?

I wouldn't put down plastic as it transfers the cold. Cloth is better, newspaper ok if it doesn't blow around. Real cold I'd put down blankets. If you are afraid of bending plants, put some pots, buckets, whatever underneath to hold cloth just above the plants. Remember to seal the sides because cold air moves like water, seeking the lowest spot and slipping under items.

In professional growing, they use a floating row cover made of a spun material. You'll see acres and acres of this white cloth over the crops......it's just a natural part of the planting process. The floating row covers don't provide more than about 5 degrees protection.

I live in PA and when a cold spell occurs with blooming plants, a lot of people use either newspaper coverage or white cloth covering -- paper tablecloths work great. Something to keep the chill off. I've seen sheets over the plants.

Plastic milk jugs artwork too. merely shrink the bottom off and guard it intense. It acts as a mini eco-friendly domicile. it really is strong too in case you plant your tomatoes alittle early. in case you comprehend the chilly snap is coming and could stay for awhile, for destiny comprehend-how, you are able to cover each and every thing with leaves and or wads of newpaper. It acts as a protective mulch of varieties.

I have an old sheet I keep for such emergencies.

I also have a small greenhouse-tent type item that I just installed over and around my newly-planted garden because like you, I am expecting cold nights.
