I'm not quite as interested in American Idol since Chris Sligh got ousted last week, but there were some good moments on both it and House last night.
On American Idol, Tony Bennett was the guest celebrity, and the category of songs that the Idols had to sing was "Standards." Blake was first, singing "Mack the Knife." He did well, and got a good response from the judges. Phil went next, singing "Night and Day." He actually did well IMO, very Sinatra-like in his rendition, but the judges were lukewarm. At this point, I think they're ready to get rid of all the second-rate Idols, even when they actually have a good performance. Melinda went third, singing "I've Got Rhythm." She was her usual outstanding self, which the judges recognized. Chris R. was next, singing "Mr. Saturday Night." He did well, and the judges loved how he updated the song while keeping the original feel. Jordin went next, singing "On a Clear Day." She really belted it out, and both Randy and Paula loved it. Simon liked her, but commented on how she didn't update the song as Chris had done right before her. Gina went next, singing "Smile." It was a really great rendition of a sweet, slow song, and she sounded great. I loved it. Randy liked it, Paula called it "a flawless performance... understated, sentimental, and beautiful" but Simon said he couldn't give it high marks because of how it compared with the previous singers. Next, came Sanjaya. What can I say? There was a horrible note in every single line he sang of "Dancing Cheek to Cheek." He should have been voted off the first week. But the worst part is that the judges are just letting him slide at this point, probably to keep up Idol's sagging ratings. Randy said, "I can't even comment on the vocals anymore, whatever. But here's what I like about you dog..." Paula said that he was charming, the notes were off at the beginning but she could see why people liked him. Simon, who is totally disgusted that this horrid excuse for a singer is still in it, said, "Maybe I should change my tactics this week... Incredible." He was smirking, rolling his eyes, and sitting with his arms folded. But the funniest thing was that Sanjaya BELIEVED him, falling apart like a little girl! He is so clueless. Haley went next, looking really beautiful and singing "Even Steven." She was another one of the Idols who sang well, but got a lukewarm response from the judges, who know that she won't be around in the final. Simon said that she had nice legs. Lakisha went last, singing "Stormy Weather." It was hard to believe, but she was not that great. She had big problems with her vocals at the beginning, singing several notes off-key. She finished strong, though, and the judges gave her great marks, barely mentioning the flubs. They pretty much let her slide based on how good she's been throughout the show.
On House, Anne Ramsey (who played Lisa, Jamie's sister on "Mad About You" with Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser) guest-starred as a pregnant photographer in her 40s who has a minor stroke. The team has to keep them from recurring. After several misdiagnoses, the mother gets jaundiced, and House is convinced that the fetus needs to be aborted to save the life of the mother, who will die in two days otherwise. His team agrees with him, but the patient refuses to allow it. She tells him that she won't do it, and that "I guess you have two days to figure out what's wrong." It turns out that Cuddy is on her side, due to the fact that she's not being objective. House calls her on it, telling her the only reason she's trying so hard to save the fetus is that she's also in her 40s and wants to have a baby at some point. Cuddy forces the team to think past House's diagnosis, and the determination is made to do exploratory surgery on the fetus, whose umbilical cord will not be cut and therefore will be able to be "put back" once the surgery is done. There was a sweet moment where the baby reaches to touch House on the finger as he works on the mother. But during the procedure, when the patient goes into cardiac arrest, House tries to cut the cord to save the woman. But Cuddy finally brings the woman back with the defibrilator, telling House as he's squeezing the umbilibal cord with scissors to "get out or you'll get electrocuted." The operation is a success, and the baby is saved. House tells the woman to thank Cuddy. The last scene we see is Anne Ramsey's character at home with the baby, obviously after carrying it to term. Other things of note in the show include the fact that Cuddy found out about Cameron and Chase having sex in the janitor's closet. She warns Cameron that it can only end in marriage or in someone getting hurt. And Anne Ramsey's character gets Chase to admit that he has true feelings for Cameron.
Hope that helped!

OK, here's my recap: This was the week the Idol contestants worked with Tony Bennett. For some it was a little stretch to bring life into this era of music. I'm trying not to show my favoritism here, but honestly, Blake, Chris, Gina and Melinda did the songs justice. Unfortunately, Phil's performance was just not that good. Jordan is still showing promise as well. Moving right along...House and company had a pregnant patient that had suffered a stroke. House decides about the only thing he can do for her, is to suggest that she ends the life of her "fetus" - he didn't use the term "baby" until near the end. While he's planning his vacation, and has tried about everything (as always), Cuddy's maternal instincts kick in, and thus the Mom (that House had referred to a woman that is allowing the fetus to kill her) and baby are saved. What to look for next: Phil leaving this week (as opposed to the deserving one) and next week, House on a plane that has some sort of pandemic going on.
