If i want to post a student film on a website like YouTube and part of a popular song by a famous musician is used in the credit sequence, is that considered breach of copyright? Is there an issue if i dont use the whole song? If i need permission then how do i get it? E.g. from Wycleff Jean?

outside of the classroom setting, your film project is subject to real world legallities. the main problem is that it will simply be impossible to get permission from the recording label for the use of the recording off the CD. this is an RIAA thing. The only way around that would be to have Wycleff come to school and perform so you could make your own recording.

i would recommend muting the audio for that section. you can even add a commentary about RIAA at that point if you feel so inclined.
