You can use the software that is out there Net Nanny which to me sounds stupid or you could go the simple cose effective way and modify you hosts file.

Note there is no extension on this file and it usually resides in the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\ect folder on win 2000 not sure about XP as I would never run that.

An example below shows you how to block porn sites and ad servers from showing up in either IE or Firefox.

There are a few websites that compile a list for inclusion into the hosts file. Seek them out and merge them into yours.

127.0.0.1 localhost <---- This must always be the first line in the file

127.0.0.1 ad.a8.net
127.0.0.1 asy.a8ww.net
127.0.0.1 www.abcsearcher.com #[Spamdexing][Microsoft.Strider]
127.0.0.1 www.acezip.net #[Win32/Adware.180Solutions]
127.0.0.1 ad588.net #[Win32/PSW.Legendmir][server down?]
127.0.0.1 adserver.adbunker.com
127.0.0.1 phpadsnew.abac.com
127.0.0.1 camgirslive.com

The only way to effectively block them is to use
a whitelist. Some parental control programs offer
this feature. But your browsing capabilities will
be severly tampered with this. If you're not doing
it because of kids i would suggest to forget it.
It's not worth it otherwise.
