If the travel was done from point zero.

20 Km East, then 20 Km West + 70 Km west

110 Km total distance traveled.

But if 20 Km East, and from that point 70 Km West:

20+70 = 90

the distance is 50 km West

Distance travelled does'nt depend on direction.
So distance=90km.
However Displacement= 50km west
Whenever we talk of a vector like displacement, we consider direction also. Thats why I specify west when i say 50 km.

it's the old physics conundrum - distance is scalar - just add them up, irrespective of direction

Displacement (change of position) is a vector quantity - it has both length and angle from the starting point

Some scalar quantities include: distance, speed
Some vector quantities include: displacement (change in position), velocity (direction matters), accleration, force, momentum....
