One of my favourites is a book called "The Ancient Engineers" by L.Sprague DeCamp. It is very readable and doesn't presume a great knowledge of engineering, or things ancient. It is still in print and is probably available at your local library.

A more recent book that looks into the development effects of technology is "Guns, Germs and Steel, The Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond. While it is not so much about the history of science specifically, he uses the history of science and development of technology to support some of his ideas. Very interesting reading either way.

i had the history of physical science for an upper division science course (whew, being a history majoy i got lucky!!!) in college and i LOVED that class. it was one of my very favorite classes! we started with the ancient greeks and went up to einstein. 2 books i remember reading are boltzmann's atom and mendeleyev's dream. i enjoyed both very much. boy, i have to think if we had any more books, i know i had at least one more. if i find it, i will let you know.
oh, and, men who made a new physics by barbara lovett cline. i am sure there was another one that was about the ancients, but i cannot locate it. and that would have been my favorite!!

25 Big Ideas is a good book but it deals with the science thats shaping our lives at present, from the last 200 or so years.
