I understand where you are coming from. I made some mistakes in my past that continue to haunt me. I have found that the best thing is to live in the present, and look forward to the future. Dwelling on the past does not help. I had to do a lot of "soul searching" in order to understand that the past cannot be changed. It can only be dealt with and understood. Controlling the feelings associated with the bad memories will come with accepting that the past is the past, and should be left there. Look forward and live now.

Yes, you can. I live for today. I have come to realize that if I just take this day and get through it, I don't get as stressed out. There is nothing you can do to change the past. If you feel the need to apologize to someone for something in your past, do it and then move on. I feel like the past is history, I've learned from my mistakes and enjoyed my accomplishments but that was then, this is now...a new day to start again. The future isn't here yet and you can't control what it brings. You can make plans and set goals for yourself but that's about it. Today, you can live the best possible and do the best you can to get through it and enjoy it. While it may sound cliche, I believe it is true. Take it one day at a time and your life with be much better.

The past has to carry along with us to an extent otherwise we would never learn from mistakes we've made or from experiences we've gone through. The future must be approached as well otherwise we would never set goals nor do things that would allow us to attain them.
But, we must live in the present and not pay so much attention to past or future that we miss opportunities, experiences and lessons right now that we can then add to the past and apply to the future.
I live in the moment, I'm impulsive, daring and love to try or learn new things that will enhance me and my life. I bring only those things that taught me lessons from the past, and I apply them to what may require them in the future. Thus, controlling either past or future really depends on what and how we deal with things in our present.

both, because every second that just past while typing this is considered the past. It already happened but i am still trying to answer something i read in the past (i.e you question) and answering in the right now present which just past. However everyone in this would is heading for the future.
We can control this feeling by trying to ignore and forget it (though i know it is hard) but if you really do want to control it try to discipline yourself by not thinking about it.

This is a hard one. How about that saying Forgive but never forget.
The past is the past but it definently inputs how we percieve the future.
But the future would be nothing without the past.
Live life having no regrets. It is hard not to hold on to the past when it does effect our future.
Good question.

I live in today and the future, both. My distant past was horrible though and full of pain.
You won't like this answer. Time. Lots of time and staying busy and helping others who were in the same boat. Give and you shall receive. @8-)
