On April 4 he was killed by a sniper's bullet while standing on the balcony of the motel where he and his associates were staying. On March 10, 1969, the accused white assassin, James Earl Ray, pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

he pleaded guilty and was convicted but later he recanted his confession but this was denied. Ray died in prison in 1998
