The best times to sow seeds are April /May as the temps are warming up or in Sept. before the temps cool down. Grass seeds can be set all year round but the reason people shy away from summer setting is that they can die due to the intense sun.

The abslolute best time is in the very late summer and early fall, preferably early to mid september. Your grass will have more than enough time to germinate, grow and be mowed 3-5 times before winter. You will have a more established lawn and much better root development going into the spring instead of having to wait for it to grow.
