depends on why you need to put one up and also the height.
2 metres is about right for all do not cut corners,if its a one off job. if its temporary about 2.5 mtr.make shure you put stress posts in on corners or your fence will sag, concrete or wooden posts,

No more than 8 feet and set in concrete at least 2 feet down.

The maximum is 10 feet. I'd go about every 8 feet for a balance between good suppport and cost.
