What you must remember is that medieval London was tiny compared with today, and that many places which are now regarded as part of London were just tiny villages in the middle ages. In the north east such villages would include places like Walthamstow and Leyton. Waltham Abbey would have been quite important, but I guess the nearest places which could be described as towns to the north-east would be Chelmsford or Colchester.
