I am probably being really thick and at 36 Im not a youngster, so please bear with me, but what does emo mean? I am into surfing, and have bought loads of surfing clothes on Ebay, but when listing items some people use the catch words surf, skate and emo in their title. Obviously I know what surf and skate are but please tell me what is emo? Be nice please!

It's not surfy or skatey - people have obviously used EMO as a keyword on eBay to catch a wider pool of fish! :-)
'Emo' is short for 'emotional' - meaning the general outlook of the emo person and the kind of music they listen to.

I will certainly be nice because i am 23 and not even sure I know what it's really about. I can tell you however, that i'm pretty sure emo is not anything to do with surfing. The kids I know who you would mistake as being "goth" get really upset because they consider themselves to be emo. And apparently...it's really difficult to be truly emo. I believe it has a lot to do with being extremely overly emotional and very upset at the world....and i mean that honestly....if you look up emo types of music...it may give you a better idea. I could be way off base but that's just my take. Hope this helps!

Hi there , 1'm 39 and I've got an emo....lol my 12 yr old daughter who proudly self -identifies as such, when I was growing up we would have called it punk, but more along the US based skate punk rather than the UK Sex Pistols type.. Some of it can be political but most of it is a poppier version of punk, with more heart on sleeve themes.

Emo = Emotional.
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

Emo - short for "emotional." Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged people (mostly teenage girls by the way).

they are totally wrong
emo's are just like us
but they dress differently and listen to music
and they arnt like goths - they are very punk type they wear punk stuff not goth stuff, they wear like stripes and black and black make-up but not alot.
some emo's skate too
most people get the wrong idea of emo's i dont see the why, just because they dress and look differently - my friend is a emo and she doesnt cut her wrists.

Alright, I am sure you are familiar with punk and goth soo this may help you:
Punk= thinks the world sucks, makes them angry and drunk
Goth=thinks the world sucks, makes them sad, kill themselves
Emo=thinks everything and everyone sucks, get sad and angry, cannot do anything but cry, whine, cut themselves, and smoke clove cigarettes. They also wear a lot of eyeliner.

well... if u no wat a gothic is... its a gothic that is very EMOtional and they hate life and cut their wrists and that!!!! lol.. colours they like are black and red and they have black straight hair and usualy long sleeved shirts.. if u download music on limewire.. download the song the emo song/emo kid by adam and andrew.. its about emo's.
