Imagine yourself traveling in a fighter plane going at the speed of sound. If the plane were to stop suddenly, you would probably fly out the windshield right? or if u are strapped in, u'll probably break all your ribs. same principle applies to the Hard Disk. The hard disk has several plates in it which revolve faster that that of a CD in a CD-Rom. when the power is suddenly shut off, the hard disk is stopped suddenly and the shock causes it to crash.

Most people know that hard shut downs damage computers and when you shut off the power, that is the same thing. The only time I have ever done this is an absolute emergency when it freezes and so far I have had no problem.

First of all, is there some specific reason you use the button on the CPU to shut down instead of clicking on "start", on your monitor screen, then clicking "shut down". Next issue, which "windows operating system" is your computer using? Windows 98? Millenium? XP? More information needed....

this is the common Q that people ask after having a HDD crash....
There are steps that windows takes care off when u shutit down properly to ensure smooth slowdown and halt of a HDD (plates inside the HDD). A hard shutdown does not do that.
what to do to prevent it???use something called UPS and always do proper shutdown.

yeah your computer is designed to use a series of events to shut down and by just pushing the button you are not going thru these series of events and could ultimately crash your computer.
