There's a letter from some girl in there who says in response to the death of Lindsay in Tokyo (?- sorry if that's wrong), that women should never stray far alone!!!!!
It's so sad that Lindsay died, and I really feel for her family. But we could get run over crossing the road in front of our house tomorrow. Yes, take the proper precautions, and be aware of your own safety and the risks you take. But never to travel alone???? What do you think???
I've been to Mexico, Nepal, America, and Italy alone, and I would never forgo those experiences.

I agree with you ferrisobeone that different countries, and indeed areas, carry different risks, and I'm not trying to boast about how I've stared danger in the face and lived to survive it, because that would not be true. My point is that I have a wealth of experiences from travelling alone and the person who wrote in would rather women denied themselves ALL these experiences by not leaving the country (or maybe she meant the house) without a chaperone.

What made her say "stray" far? She makes women sound like dogs! In case she hasn't realised, most women are equal to men and if men can "stray far alone" why the hell can't women?

Wow, hang on a second, were not talking about Mexico, Nepal, America or Italy... all of these are relatively safe for single travellers, I can agree through experience, but Japan is very different for women travellers. I hate to write this because it sounds so cynical but how many times in the last ten years have you heard of women going missing an turning up dead in that country? My friends from Japan have told me of many stories that I will not post on this site, but unfortunately we do need to take the warnings.
How many times have western women been killed there and no convictions ever brought??? Three come to mind instantly from the last 5yrs.
Like all things there's ways and means of doing something and there's many ways to reduce the risks when travelling alone, but western girls are very much a target in Japan.

It is probably safer to travel with someone else. I have to travel alone myself, and I take extra security precautions. It seems that due to the physical make up of women that we are more likely to face danger than men. But, tragedy happens every day, and it isn't always women. It is virtually impossible for some people to travel alone, but just be careful.

I've not seen it but to some extend I agree that at times (obviously depending on the place) it can be quite unsafe for women to travel alone but not always.

think theres always hype when something like this is highlighted in the press though, it soon dies down as something else is catapulted into the spotlight. As long as you take the same precautions as you would anywhere, you'll be ok, all it takes is common sense
