Use at least a free scanner: either AVG or AVAST. Make sure they stay up to date.
Better protection for a slight cost is available from http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ which BitDefender 10 and Kaspersky the top two.
Yo should also use a spyware protector like Microsoft Defender to keep the spys spying elsewhere!
Viruses arrive via email a lot. You could reject those mails not know on your accepted mail list. You could also learn to watch what attachments are on the emails. Certain viruses are email attachments.
that should help some!

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:

no antivirus is good if it is not updated regularly.
so sometime even if u have the best AV S and not updated it for long time... then it is sure that new viruses cant get catched with ur AV Software. If u want best and Free AV software head to www.avast.com
and if u want best Paid Antivirus Software then go to www.kaspersky.com
