If you want to be good in chess practise hard. Try not to lose. When I play chess I always try not to lose.

I'm not sure this is the question, but chess can be a very rewarding part of your life. It has been for me.

Well I don't know about your life, but I've been playing for two decades and I'm just getting to be reasonably good. (About - 1700 FIDE)
Unless you happen to be really gifted, you'll be somewhere with the rest of us - capable of beating all those who don't play seriously off-hand, but never quite able to get to the top of the club. The passion comes and go, and sometimes you'll find yourself too busy in your life for chess, but for the true player, it always ends up coming back.
It's a nice hobby. But unless you think you have a shot at at least the national title, don't forget it's a game.

Are you asking if your life is like Chess? Or, do you want your life to resemble a chessboard?
