It is fine when idling.. doesn't backfire whatsoever. But when i engage the gears and accelerate it backfires at low rpm, but only low rpm (as far as i can tell anyway, i might not be able to hear it).

There also seems to be less power overall... so what should I be addressing?

when gas combustion is excessive..your getting too much gas into the cylinders...in other words you need carburator work..and changing the spark plug and adjusting the valves wouldn't hurt either...

Sounds like a burnt valve to me. Possibilities are timing, blown head gasket, carburetor problems or a firing problem. Best to get someone that is qualified to check it out. Save yourself a lot of headache.
