A pap smear is recommended for all women whether they are sexually active or not.

The guideline is that pap smears start being taken at around 18 or 21 or if she is sexually active whichever comes first. Even if the girl is sexually active she will have to have her pap smear done at least every year if insurance covers it that way (and many do).

The pap smear is a screening tool to catch cervical cancer in its earliest stages, even before it becomes cancer.

They will take a special brush that picks up some of the cells from your cervix to be sent off to a lab for analysis.

The results will come back in about 4 weeks but I've had it come back in as soon as a week before.

The cervix does get a bit irritated with this exam but that's because of the brush that is used. Having a bit of spotting after the exam is normal and only lasts about a day or two. If it continues past that then you need to let your dr know so that they can evaluate the situation further.

Like with the pelvic exam it should not hurt but if it does it's for one of the following reasons:

1. being tense (natural to be nervous because it's the first time being done which is why it's important to relax when this is being done)

2. the dr being too rough (you can ask them to stop)

3. something wrong such as infection (and an infection of the cervix can cause bleeding to occur as well which is why I say if the bleeding goes past a couple of days to let the dr know what is going on)

A really good dr will explain everything that is going on so that there will not be as much nervousness about what is being done.

A pap should be done on every woman and/or teen girl yearly. The purpose is to check for any abnormalities of the cervix and vaginal wall. It's not a scary thing, just uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing.
Don't worry the doctor will be professional and according to regulations, a nurse or assistant will be in the room with you two at all times. My docs have always been professional until they get to know my personality and sense of humor and then we joke or talk about family while he is doing the pap on me. The doctor should make you feel as comfortable as possible. If not, try asking them questions, like what are you going to do next, what are you looking for, etc. You are paying them to look at your body, so don't be afraid to ask questions and speak up!

Good luck!

the doctor usually does one if you are sexually active or having specific problems with periods, itching and burning etc, otherwise you dont need one till you get married or start having sex.
