the 2004 BMW 530i shares the same powertrain as the 2001-2003 older style 530i. That part is pretty solid. However, 2004 being the first production of that new model, I would suspect it to have more electronic issues than if you were to get a newer one where they have worked out the bugs for newer production models. I never get a new car in it's first year of production for this reason... though electronic problems aren't a big deal, it's the engine/transmission type of problems I try to avoid.

How reliable is the 2004 BMW 530i?
Any inputs from 2004 530i owners on reliability of iDrive and other parts of the car?

dont listen (read) to busted bride. Bmw's are very reliable cars. we've had a 1984 E30 323i and a 1992 E45 Bmw 525i. the 525i has done over 520000km's on the clock and still pushing. it still has awesome power and we can just jump into it anytime and do long distances at super speeds. My dad knows all about Bmw's. He's a Bmw enthusiast. And every time he sees that 2000 540i he goes crazy. he just wishes he had one. Its a super car and it can knock almost any new car on the run. I say go get that car. as long as u service it, u wont regret it

I guess I'm the opposite of the last poster, I always seem to buy cars the first year they go into production (2000 Maxima, 2006 Azera) without any issues. Some cars actually get worse in quality as they get later in their production life such as: ¡ª BMW X3
¡ª Cadillac STS
¡ª Dodge Magnum
¡ª Ford Mustang (V8)
¡ª Mazda RX-8
¡ª Volvo S40
as listed in the recent Consumer Reports car issue. BMW is middle of the road (pretty solid) in the reliability of their cars, certainly not as bad as Mercedes recent junk cars. The best luxury cars continue to come from Japan (Lexus, Infiniti, Acura) but BMW is the cream of the crap from European side of things...definitely steer clear of Audi's too.

If you purchase, make sure you have the dealer update the i-drive software. Lots of bugs since the 2004. You may not have the Bluetooth function as well because it uses a older unit of telecom control.

I suggest finding one with a certified warr. good for 100k. Then have no worries. These cars can be expensive to repair out of warr. A lot of electronics, computers, software etc.
