Yes with ur service providers registers. First they must have ur cell number or the other end cell number.
Ur messages will be stored in the registers in digital format for sometimes for future needs.
Specially mobile messages are stored for short periods like 3 or 6 months depending in ur countrys security measures.
Of course they can trace u for illegal things with the help of ur service provider with criminal charges.

Police Officials CAN get their hands on your SMS messages even after they have already been exchanged, whether a tap has been put on or not. There are 2 ways of going about doing this.
If an investigation begins...
1. They can obtain a warrant to seize one of the phones, and IF there is any traces of the messages, they will be able to view them. (This is the obvious one.)
2. They can contact the carrier of the phone, and can easily, as Police Officials, obtain copies of the messages sent and received from your phone.
However, there has to be some grounds for this to happen, such as suspicion of a crime taking place, in order for an investigation to occur.

Short sweet and to the point. Yes. Not only in SMS but anything you talked about, too. It is NOT a secure system.
Take care,

Yes, the police can get the mobile companies to share the information if it concerns national security.
Have you done that??? Well, quickly try to find a good hiding space :-)

Not unless they physically have one of the phones, no. However, if they got a warrant, they can "wiretap" the cellphone call, which would include SMS messages. However, that wouldn't recover any messages from before the tap goes into effect.
