How Long are contractions supposed to last... I know they are supposed to be less then 5 mins. apart but how long are they supposed to last like the duration of each one? I have been getting contractions for last 2 days about 3-5 mins apart when I was in yesterday they told me, but they said they weren't strong enough and then sent me home cause my uterus hadn't dialated. it was 50% and soft, but not dialated at all. My contractions have gotten a little stronger, but they are lasting a really long time. on average 8 mins. is this normal? I still don't think I'm dialated.. I don't want to go back in and be sent home again I was wondering if anyone knew how long too long was for a contraction to last. And what the risks are?

Hi. With my third pregnancy I was having contractions for three weeks on and off before I actually went into full labour and had my baby girl. I asked my doctor how could I tell if I was in serious labour if I was constently having contractions, and he just smiled and said that I would Know. Its the difference between the pain that says "oh, there goes another one" and "hold on to the world 'cause this one's a doosy!"
Hope that helps. But always when in doubt, err on the side of caution, its your and your baby's health that is most important.

I think you should call your doctor or speak to someone from the Labor Dept. at the hospital. I would say go on back to the hospital. Better safe than sorry. But if you are really afraid they will make you go home again, then call. Also, if you do go and they tell you to go home and you don't think that's a good idea, you don't have to leave. They cannot make you leave.

Go get checked. The risk is having your baby at home. If they send you back home its ok. Better safe than sorry. Best of luck and God bless!

everyone's labor pains are different, and everyone's boby reacts in a different way to labor. if you feel the need to go in and get checked do it. like everyone is saying, go in, or call. better to be safe than sorry.
