Now:
Alex: |------|------|------|------|
Bea: |------|
6 years in the future:
Alex: |------|------|------|------|****
Bea: |------|****
(**** = 6 years)
Let one part |------| be n, we have: (4n+6) -14 = (n+6) x 2
Solve the equation we get n = 10
So Bea is 10 years old now. In 6 years, Bea will be 16, while Alex 46.

currently Bea is say y and Alex is 4y since Alex is 4 times as old as Bea. You write it out one step at a time. With word problems you piece it apart and write it out.
In 6 years that shows you adding 6 to one of them, and it says in 6 years Alex' age will be. So at that point you have Alex' age + 6 which is 4y + 6. Now you analyze the rest 14 years more which is 14 added to something, 2 times as old as Bea. 2 times as old as Bea is 2y and 14 more than that is 2y + 14.
Now you have it split in half just make them equal to each other. 2y + 14 = 4y + 6
simplify subtract 2y from both sides and subtract 6 from each side. 2y = 8, y = 4. Hope that helps email if u want, m_lavallee@cox.net

n = Bea's age
4n = Alex's age
4n+6=2(n+6)+14
4n+6=2n+12+14
2n=20
n=10=Bea's age
Check:
Bea is 10; Alex is 40.
In 6 years Alex will be 46 and Bea will be 16
46 is 2*16 + 14 = 32+14

A = 4B
A + 6 = 14 + 2(B+6)
4B + 6 = 14 + 2B + 12
4B + 6 = 2B + 26
2B + 6 = 26
2B = 20
B = 10

LET ALEX AGE =x
LET BEA AGE =y
x=4y-------------------------(1)
x+6 =2y+14+6-----------------(2)
from eqn (1)
4y+6 = 2y+14+6
2y=20-6
y=7 YRS
x=28YRS
