I will assume you are running XP.

There were probably instructions that came with the hard drive (I know, personally, that Seagate and Western Digital provide them. I don't remember about the others I've bought)

I've done the procedure a few times on the same computer (interesting thing happened, the first time, everything looked fine. Then I found out the "Restore Point" function wasn't working. I had to get a bigger drive and repeated the procedure. Somehow the functioning returned to "Restore Points".) as I already maxed out the drive bays with 2 DVD-burners, a floppy drive and 3 Hard drives.

Anyway, I would follow the instructions and then I'd pull out the old drive and keep it as a back-up for a while, just in case. Once you're certain everything is 100%, you can install the old drive back in and use it for extra storage. (but you should format it and erase everything on there as the old operating system might try to "boot" in some circumstances. Besides, it's more legal that way.)

Otherwise, I would just do a fresh install (if you have the disc). It is a bit more work (and time if you have XP SP1. You'd have to install SP2 and all the critical updates since it came out.) But, there is also the possibility that the new install won't pass the WGA (?) and then you'll have to call them and try to convince them your legitimate. (I do fresh installs because I have legitimate access to a corporate edition of XP and it does not require authentication, and I'm used to it. Plus I usually only have to load a minimal amount of other software.)

Best of Luck

well, the only way I can think of is to first install Windows on your new hard drive, copy all your files that you want to keep from your old hard drive onto the new one, format the old one and then fill it back up with files (but don't re-install windows on it). so now you got the old one with no Windows and the new one with Windows (which automatically makes it the default drive.

Hi. There are jumpers on the back of the drives. Set your old one to SL (slave) and your new one to MA (master). That should do it!
