It's hard to judge the size from the picture but definitely an alligator skull. What a cool find. Congrats.

actually considering the lenght of his snout compared to his skull it looks more like the skull of a caiman.

Sure looks like it could be one, especially if they're common in your area. Looks like the top mouth/head part of a gator or croc to me.
