Very simple question, downloading is when you bring a file from an outside source (internet) to your computer. Uploading is when you move a file from your computer to an outside source. Whenever you upload the original file stays on your computer, likewise when you download the original file remains at with the host.

If you click on a link on a webpage and begin a file download, that's a download. You requested the file transfer, so it is downloading from one computer to your computer. Uploading is when somebody is downloading a file from your computer. They requested the file and you are sending it to them. The terms download and upload are relative to what you're doing with the file--getting or giving, sending or receiving. Some people mix the terms up, but everybody still knows what we mean. LOL I hope that helped.

Generally downloading refers to getting information off of the Internet and storing it on your computer. For example, if you buy a song online from Itunes you download it onto your computer; the song is now stored on your harddrive. You might also download a picture that has been sent to you via email.
Uploading refers to putting something on the Internet. For instance, you upload your home video to YouTube.

Uploading is the transmission of a file from one computer system to another, usually larger computer system. From a network user's point-of-view, to upload a file is to send it to another computer that is set up to receive it.
To download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a webserver, FTP server, or other similar systems. A download is any file that is offered for downloading or that has been downloaded.

Uploads are what packets are sent out or pulled from your PC or server. Say i had a server that you wanted to get some picutres from you would download them to your PC(incoming) while they would be uploading(outgoing) from my server. It uploads to the net then downloads from the net. The speeds vary usually on a home dsl line you get 1.5 MPs down and .386 MPs up.

upload takes files from your computer and puts copies of them on the internet for people to download, where a download is taking a copy of those uploaded files and saving them to your hard drive.
