Should I go and get on birth control now or wait and go to a doctor's office near the place where I will be living next year.... or does it matter? I just don't know how they deal with the prescription refills, etc. in that situation.

It shouldn't matter if you move across the state or across the country, so long as you've been prescribed something by a doctor, you can always get that prescription filled. All you have to do is call the pharmacy filling the prescription where you're living now before you move and inform them you're moving and that you'd like to start filling your prescription at a different location. Then call the new pharmacy you will be going to and tell them you'd like to get your prescription transferred from a different pharmacy and they will ask for some information and take care of it for you.

This is easiest if you use a chain pharmacy like CVS or Wal-Mart, as they can switch information around very easily if it's all within the same store.

If you mean the birth control pill, most doctors write a prescription for a year's supply, so that shouldn't be a problem. And the current doctor can easily transfer your records to the one where you move, so there is no reason to go without protection until after the move.

Your pharmacy can also easily transfer your prescription to your new city.

With most big pharmacy chains now being in all parts of the country (and double check the chain that you use to see if they are going to be where you are going) the prescription can be transferred to where you are. Or even refilled when you get to your new location after you get the script (which as the others said many OB/GYNs will give you a script that will last for a year). Then shortly after you get settled in where you are moving in to you can start finding a new OB/GYN to give you your next script when you run out.

If you need to be on the pill now I would go ahead and start now.

Just go on it now. Your OBGyn will give you a prescription for a year's supply, but you pick it up month by month at the pharmacy. When you move, it is very easy to get your prescription filled at a new pharmacy. You just bring your old one in with your insurance information and what not. Be sure and find a new OBGyn near your new residence before you run out of your prescription.

As long as you're in the same state I don't think it'll matter. You'll still go to a doctor covered by your HMO or whatever. If you want to get on it now, then get on it now because you need to be on it for 3 months for it to be totally effective.
