My OB did a transvaginal ultrasound at my first appointment at 8 weeks, but not all do. Generally you'll be able to hear the heartbeat on doppler at 10 weeks. Some women don't have an ultrasound until the major one at 20 weeks.

Since the first trimester is the most vulnerable, doctors have now started to look into early pregnancy ultrasounds. It helps them to check the growth, and to predict any defects or chances of miscarriages from early on and take remedial actions.
I had my first ultrasound just three days back at 5 weeks pregnant. Counting from my LMP, I should've been 8 weeks pregnant - but the scan showed that I'm only at 5 weeks. Also, they did an internal scan as they were not able to detect the foetal heartbeat.
Its totally comfortable - they insert some sort of instrument inside which is well-lubricated and ask you to be very relaxed. Anyway, they could not detect the heartbeat this way as well - although they did spot the gestation sac and the yolk sac.
I have been called on Saturday (6 weeks) for my next scan and prescribed a few medications to ensure a healthy growth for the embryo.
I think I've been smart to get the scan done this early, so the doctors could detect the problem (according to them the g.s. was grown enough for the heartbeat to be there) and also for me to know that I'm not 2 months, but only 5 weeks pregnant.
Waiting as long as 12 weeks wouldn't be a great idea, as any problems encountered cannot be solved this late.
Good Luck with your baby!

I am six weeks now and really want to get an ultrasound as soon as possible for my own peace of mind - just to know everything is right and where it is supposed to be. However, my doctor said they only do it around 16-20 weeks. She is ordering a sonogram at 11 weeks, which is a newer thing to test for DS and basically make sure the pregnancy is healthy, but she said that was the very earliest they could do.
I wonder if that is an insurance thing, as it seems it would make everyone feel much better to have an early ultrasound if they could? I really like my doctor, but she is firm on this and it makes me want to look into other options.

I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks and coz I couldn't drink enough fluid before hand (morning sickness had kicked in big time!) I had to have an internal - which is NOT fun at all!
I don't think its normal to have an ultrasound so early though - I had had surgery prior to finding out I was pregnant so mine was sort of a special case.
I'm pretty sure the first ultrasound is usually around 12-14 weeks to check the nucual translucency (to check for down syndrome) and to see if the baby is developing normally.

It all will depend on when your OBGYN, midwife, or Dr chooses to but most drs do the first one at 8 weeks (1st appt) this first ultrasound can be either the "normal" ultrasound through your belly or an internal one basically its a rod (looks kinda like a dildo) they put a condom type thing over it and use lubricant it doesn't hurt might be a little uncomfy but doesn't hurt its easier to see the baby this early on with the internal ultrasound which is why they do that but not all clinics have them so again it really depends on your dr/clinics way of doing things

Most of the time you don't have an ultrasound untill around 20 weeks...sorry! Although some doctors do them earlier than that. Good news...next time you go to the doctor they should check for a fetal heartbeat (around 10 weeks) and it is possible then you might get to hear the magic little thumps! Not everyone does that early but if your a slender person it is very possible!

I had my first ultrasound at 4 weeks and I could see the heart beating. It was a trans vaginal. I couldn't hear the heart beating because the doctor said was to earlie. But I was really happy just to see and know that everything was fine.

When you get your ultrasound it depends on your doctor. Some doctors will do an ultrasound early in pregnancy to date it and to check everything out. Others like mine only did one and thats at 18-20weeks. I had mine at 19weeks2days.
You can ask your doctor when you get your ultrasound and if she says that its going to be around 18-20weeks then you can ask if you can get an extra one done befor that one but she may only do it if your insurance will cover it.
With a previous pregnancy that ended in miscarriage i had an ultrasound done that was vaginal. They hold it and ask you to take it and guide it inside you. Then they just move it around a little bit. It doesnt hurt or anything if thats what you were wondering. They do a vaginal ultrasound early in pregnancy because it gives them a better picture. if you have anymore questions just email me.

The first ultrasound is around twelve weeks, with another around twenty weeks. They can do a vaginal u/s (the probe actually goes through the vagina to the cervix), but they usually won't do that unless they suspect a problem.

My doc did one at 8 weeks to confirm that I was pregnant and to check check everything. I think that I remember reading that 8-12 weeks is normal. The first u/s they did for me was a very uncomfortable wand with blue goo on it ....I was told that and u/s on the belly does no good that early on.
