I have to group the following elemets into 2 groups. How and why would they go into each group?

1. calcium chloride
2. citric acid
3. lauric acid
4. potassium iodide
5. sodium chloride
6. sucrose

They aren't elements, they're compounds.

1, 4, and 5 go together because they're ionic salts. 2, 3, and 6 are organic compounds with covalent bonds between the atoms.

Hint: Look at the formulas for citric acid, lauric acid and sucrose. Mainly C, H, and O. Look at the other formulas, mainly strong metal ions and halide ions, in other words, salts. You should figure the rest of it out.
