on a v6, 98 mustang, to replace the rear wheel studs with some that are 1" longer, do i have to remove the axle?

in most cases no. it may be a tight fit and possably you may need to loosed the backing plate.
use an old nut and a stack of washers to pull the new stud in place. check for seating looseness for a few days as sometimes they don't fully seat at first.and work loose
